Tips For A Smoother Drop Off
When children start at a new school, it is a big change for the whole family. It is natural for your child to react strongly to new situations. We understand that is it also quite natural for parents/guardians to worry about their child during this time. We want to make this transition as smooth as possible and for this we have put together a list of helpful tips.
Family Photo
A family photo or photo of the parents has been shown to help children easy into a new routine by releasing oxytocin, a hormone that gives us the “warm & fuzzies” & will help your child remember that their family is still there for them. It helps the child not feel alone. Your child may decide to hold & carry it with them during their first days.
Pictograms of Daily Schedule/Routine
Using the daily schedule pictograms on the Sol wall to explain to your child how the day will go will help him/her remember that you will return for them at the end of the day. You can show your child the pictograms and go through the events of the day as well as show them when you will pick him/her up.
The Wall Clock Is Your Amigo
You can also try using the wall clock to show your child the time when you will return. This predictability and routine will help him/her know when to expect your return each day until he/she is eventually acclimated.
Avoid Sneaking Away
It is best for the child to be fully aware when you are departing. This way he/she will not develop the need to attach/cling to your body due to fear of not knowing when you will sneak out. We promise you it will get better with some more time and that this transition is actually harder on the parents than the child, because our teachers take great care of and will love your children as their own. You should try to not feel guilty about handing your child over to the teacher, kissing, &/or hugging him/her goodbye, and then departing. Sometimes, out of sight is truly out of mind which helps the child get accustomed to the routine quicker. The teacher will send you a pic of your child via Procare later on so you can check on how he/she is doing during their day. You can also send us messages via Procare to check in on him/her.
